As a retired optical designer, I like it for education purposes.
The User Guide, which can also be downloaded from the Lambda Research website, is an excellent introduction to optical design, taking a beginner right through from the first encounter with OSLO EDU to a "real" design project - a Cooke triplet - from first concept to analysis, optimisation and finally issuing ISO10110 drawings with all the tolerances. Also included is a chapter on the foundations of programming in the C-like "CCL" macro language, for which the compiler is available even in the free version of the OSLO software (which is restricted to lenses with 10 surfaces or fewer, including the image)
